British MEP Linda McAvan (S&D), rapporteur on the tobacco directive which was voted on Tuesday at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, was our guest this week. The new law proposal was faced by very strong opposition of the lobby of the tobacco industry. In a statement published just after the vote, Philipp Morris International stressed this new law will simply fuel illegal trade. Linda McAvan reacted by asking why the tobacco industry is spending so much money for lobbying (1,2 Million euros each year according to the Greens Group) if EU laws apparently don't work. She also received a strong mandate to start negotiating with EU members next week and said she is quite confident to have a new law before the European elections in May 2014.
