Following years of nasty negotiations with massive industry lobbying and the resign of a health commissioner due to bribery accusations the EU finally took a decision on new and tougher tobacco rules. Bigger warning signs on cigarette packages and a ban of certain characterizing flavours are some results. The new regulations also include e-cigarettes which are to be classified either as medicine or as tobacco. The tobacco industry says tougher rules will encourage smuggling. EU politicians say it will save lives.
