This new EU mission starts as the Italian search and rescue operation "Mare Nostrum" ("Our sea" in IT) is ending.
However, Triton has a smaller budget - 2.9 million euros per month - than Mare Nostrum - 9 million euros per month. Triton will also have to operate with less equipment.
The European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) warns that Triton will never be able to replace Mare Nostrum in terms of rescuing illegal migrants.
The European Parliament also calls for a burden-sharing of EU member states.
